Sociology and sociological are terms continually on men's lips and indicate a point of view which veers from the individualistic to a broader conception of men in their associate life and of human society in its solidarity. It is not strange then that tardily, but unquestionably, Christian Missions should feel the influence of this thought and men begin to speak of missions as a religious force which not only transforms individual lives but touches society as a whole, giving birth to new institutions and permeating non-Christian lands with a nobler spirit. It is because of this constructive power, examples of which can be found in missionary activity in every land, that there may be claimed for missions a larger scope. Any force differentiates as it develops and Christian teaching as it takes hold upon a country, adjusting its methods to the needs and the conditions of that country, appears in various forms. The first is Evangelistic in its method, and here the teachings of Jesus, God and man's need of God, are brought home to the individual soul with the direct purpose of bringing the life into vital relation to God. As groups of those interested in this teaching are formed, the church appears, to nurture the new-born life. The school, which has always shadowed the church in history, develops in a more or less complete system of education.
